▶ 26A vs 26X vs Jumbo: Which Do You Need?

HP makes two official versions of this cartridge (26A and 26X). We also offer a Jumbo aftermarket version with extra toner fill. Here is how they compare:

HP 26A (CF226A) - Standard Yield: 3,100 pages. Best for light printing (under 500 pages per month). Lower upfront cost but higher cost per page.

HP 26X (CF226X) - High Yield (this product): 9,000 pages. Best for regular office printing (500-2,000 pages per month). Nearly 3x the pages of the 26A at a lower cost per page. This is what most businesses should buy.

HP 26X Jumbo - Extra High Yield: 12,000 pages. Aftermarket extended fill. Best for high-volume environments (2,000+ pages per month). 33% more pages than the standard 26X.

HP 26X MICR: 9,000 pages with magnetic toner. Required for printing checks with MICR encoding. Only needed if you print checks. Regular documents do not require MICR.

Not sure which to buy? If you print more than a few hundred pages per month, the 26X (this product) is the best value for most users.

▶ How to Install

1. Turn on the printer and open the front cover (pull down on the front panel).

2. Grip the handle on the existing toner cartridge and pull it straight out toward you.

3. Remove the new cartridge from its packaging. Do not touch the green drum or the gold contacts.

4. Gently rock the new cartridge side to side 5-6 times to distribute the toner evenly inside.

5. Pull the orange tab to remove the protective sealing tape. Pull smoothly in a straight line. Do not touch the exposed toner opening.

6. Align the cartridge with the tracks inside the printer and slide it in until it clicks into place.

7. Close the front cover. The printer will automatically recognize the new cartridge and calibrate.

If the printer displays "Supply Problem" or does not recognize the cartridge, remove it and reseat it firmly. Ensure the sealing tape was fully removed. If the issue persists, power cycle the printer (off for 30 seconds, then back on).

▶ Compatible vs Remanufactured: What Is the Difference?

This is a COMPATIBLE cartridge, which means it is brand new and built from all-new components. It is not a remanufactured or refilled OEM cartridge.

Compatible (this product): Brand new cartridge manufactured to match the OEM specifications. New drum, new toner, new housing, new chip. Never used before. Manufactured in ISO-certified facilities with strict quality control.

Remanufactured: A used OEM cartridge that has been disassembled, cleaned, refilled with toner, and reassembled. Quality varies depending on the condition of the original cartridge and the refurbisher. May have wear on the drum or housing from previous use.

OEM (HP branded): Manufactured by HP. Highest price ($175+). Same print quality as this compatible cartridge but at 4-5x the cost.

Our compatible cartridges produce the same print quality as OEM at a fraction of the price. If you experience any quality issues, the 1-year warranty covers a full replacement.

▶ Print Quality and Coverage

The 9,000 page yield is based on the ISO/IEC 19752 standard at 5% page coverage. 5% coverage is approximately one paragraph of text on a standard letter-size page.

Actual page yield depends on your printing habits:

Text-only documents (5% coverage): approximately 9,000 pages.

Text with occasional graphics (10% coverage): approximately 4,500 pages.

Heavy graphics or images (20% coverage): approximately 2,250 pages.

Draft mode or light text: 10,000+ pages.

If you regularly print documents with heavy graphics, charts, or images, expect a lower page count. For primarily text-based business documents (invoices, contracts, reports, correspondence), the 9,000 page estimate is accurate.

▶ Troubleshooting

"Supply Problem" or "Incompatible Cartridge" message: Remove the cartridge, check that the orange sealing tape is fully removed, reseat the cartridge firmly, and close the cover. If the message persists, power cycle the printer (off 30 seconds, then on). This message is common on first install and almost always resolves with a power cycle.

Light or faded printing: Rock the cartridge gently side to side to redistribute toner. If printing is still light after redistributing, the cartridge may be reaching end of life (check page count in printer settings).

Black lines or streaks on pages: The drum may have been touched during installation (fingerprint oils cause streaks). Print 20-30 pages and the streaks will usually clear as the drum rotates. If streaks persist, the drum may be scratched (contact us for warranty replacement).

Toner smears or does not fuse to paper: The fuser (inside the printer) is responsible for bonding toner to paper using heat. If toner smears or rubs off, the fuser may be failing. This is a printer issue, not a cartridge issue. Try printing on a different paper type or weight. If the problem persists with any cartridge, the fuser assembly needs service.

Printer does not detect cartridge after install: Remove the cartridge, inspect the gold contacts and the chip on the cartridge for damage or debris. Clean gently with a dry lint-free cloth. Reseat the cartridge. Power cycle the printer. If the printer still does not detect the cartridge, contact us for a warranty replacement.
