▶ How to Load Paper in Your Star TSP100 / TSP143

1. Pull the cover-open lever and lift the cover.

2. Drop the roll in so the paper feeds from the bottom of the roll toward the front of the printer.

3. Pull a few inches of paper straight out across the cutter.

4. Close the cover until it clicks. The printer feeds and cuts the leader on its own.

Tip: if the printer feeds paper but the receipt is blank, the roll is in backwards. Flip it so the paper comes off the bottom and try again.

▶ Which Roll Size Fits the TSP100 / TSP143 - and Why the Driver Says 72mm

If you looked in the printer driver and saw "72 x Receipt," that is the print width: the area the head can actually mark. The paper itself is 80mm (3 1/8 in) wide; the extra 8mm is the unprinted margin the guides hold on each edge. Leave the driver on 72 x Receipt and load 3 1/8 in rolls.

Star rates the whole TSP100 family for 80mm paper on rolls up to 83mm across. That one number decides what fits.

❌ Any roll over 3 1/4 in (83mm) across - the cover will not latch.

❌ 2 1/4 in (58mm) rolls - too narrow for the guides. The paper drifts and prints a strip down one side.

❌ 3 in bond or carbonless rolls (impact-printer paper) - not thermal. The printer feeds it and prints nothing.

❌ TSP143IV SK linerless label stock - a different consumable for the SK model only.

▶ Troubleshooting: Blank or Faded Receipts

• Receipt comes out blank: the roll is loaded backwards. Thermal paper prints on one side only. Flip the roll.

• Print is light or patchy: the print head has residue on it. Power off, wipe the head gently with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol, let it dry.

• A faint line runs the length of every receipt: a speck of debris on the head or platen. Same cleaning.

• Cover will not close: the roll is over 83mm across. Use a 230 ft roll.

• Paper-out light with paper loaded: the leader did not pass the sensor. Reseat the roll and pull the leader past the cutter before closing.

▶ Why BPA-Free Matters

Thermal paper prints with a heat-reactive coating, and older coatings used BPA as the developer. Cashiers and servers handle hundreds of receipts a shift, and BPA transfers to skin on contact. This stock uses a BPA-free developer, so the people printing and handling receipts all day are not picking it up with every transaction.

▶ Why American-Made Paper

Paper is the cheapest part of the whole POS system and the one that fails most often. A roll that runs short, curls, or leaves residue on the print head costs you faded receipts, a jam in the middle of a rush, and a customer waiting at the counter. This stock is made in the United States on mill-run equipment, cut to a true 3 1/8 in, wound on a consistent 1/2 in core, and its coating runs clean on the head so print quality holds roll after roll. That consistency is the whole point: you load it and forget about it.

Keep rolls in the original case, away from direct sun, heat sources and humidity. Thermal coating reacts to heat, so a hot vehicle or a shelf over the fryer will pre-fog the paper. Stored at room temperature it keeps for 5 years or more, and printed receipts stay readable for years when filed away from light and heat.

TSP100 is Star's name for the family (the futurePRNT series, usually written Future Print). TSP143 is the model number on the label under the printer, followed by a generation and interface code. Every US-market TSP143 uses this same 80mm x 230 ft roll:

Not sure which you have? The suffix tells you the connection: U is USB, LAN is Ethernet, W is Wi-Fi, Bi is Bluetooth, UE and UEWB are the current USB-C and wireless models. It does not change the paper. The only exception in the family is the TSP143IV SK, which prints on linerless label stock.
