▶ What This Cable Does and When You Need It

This is the direct USB link between a VeriFone PIN pad and the computer or POS terminal that drives it. It carries both the data and the 5V power the pad needs, so a single cable handles the whole connection. VeriFone describes it as a USB cable in device mode, powered from a +5V USB host.

The PIN pad end is the 28-pin connector that sits inside the cable compartment on the back of the pad. The host end is a standard USB-A plug in a molded housing.

• You bought a P400, P200, VX820 or VX805 and it arrived with no cable. VeriFone ships PIN pads bare. The cable is always a separate purchase.

Not for the M400, the Engage V200c host port itself, or any pad with a different multi-port connector. If your pad is not in the list above, check your PIN pad model before ordering.

▶ How to Install

1. Power down the PIN pad and the host.

2. Open the cable compartment on the back of the pad by loosening the captive screw and sliding the cover off.

3. Seat the 28-pin connector fully, then slide the cover back and tighten the screw. The cover clamps the cable so it cannot pull loose.

4. Plug the USB-A end into the host and power the host on. The pad powers up from the USB port.

▶ Troubleshooting

• Pad does not power on: confirm the host USB port is powered and try a different port. Some hubs and front-panel ports do not supply full current.

• Pad powers on but the host does not see it: reseat the 28-pin end. It must be fully seated and clamped by the compartment cover.

• Pad powers on and off during transactions: the host port is not supplying enough current. Connect directly to the PC or POS rather than through a hub.

• Everything worked with the old cable but not this one: check that you ordered the USB version. The serial version of this cable family uses a DB9 end and needs its own power supply.

▶ Why Use the OEM Cable

The 28-pin connector is a VeriFone design. Third-party copies have to guess the pin assignments and the power negotiation, and a cable that gets either one wrong can leave the pad rebooting mid-sale or fail to enumerate at all. The OEM cable is the part VeriFone tested with these pads. The cable is the cheapest component in the lane and the one that goes wrong most often, which is why it is worth getting the right one.
