▶ What This Cable Does, When You Need It, and Which Length

Serial is the connection most PC-based and ECR-based lanes still use for a PIN pad. VeriFone describes this part as the RS-232 DB9 cable, powered from a +12V DC adaptor, and calls it the generic cable for all RS232-based hosts. The pad talks to the host over the DB9 pins, and the DC jack on the same housing feeds power into the pad because a serial port cannot supply any.

• Your P400, P200, VX820 or VX805 arrived with no cable. VeriFone ships PIN pads bare, and the cable is always a separate line item.

• Your host has a 9-pin serial port and no free USB port, or your POS software is configured for a COM port.

• The old cable is crushed, the DB9 shell is cracked, or the pad reboots because the DC jack has gone loose.

• You are adding lanes and want every pad wired the same way.

Measure the actual path the cable will take, not the straight-line distance. Cables that are pulled tight at the connector fail early.

Not for the M400, or for hosts with only an RJ45 serial port (that is the CBL282-036 coiled cable, a different part). If your host port is a flat rectangular USB port, you need the USB version of this cable instead.

▶ How to Install

1. Power down the host. Do not connect the power pack yet.

2. Open the cable compartment on the back of the pad by loosening the captive screw and sliding the cover off.

3. Seat the 28-pin connector fully, slide the cover back, and tighten the screw so the cover clamps the cable.

4. Plug the DB9 end into the host serial port and tighten the thumbscrews.

5. Connect the VeriFone power pack to the DC jack on the DB9 housing last, then plug the pack into the wall. The pad powers on.

▶ Troubleshooting

• Pad does not power on: the power pack is not connected or not seated in the DC jack. Serial ports supply no power, so the pack is required.

• Pad powers on but the POS does not see it: check the COM port number and baud rate in the POS software, then reseat the DB9 and the 28-pin end.

• Pad reboots during transactions: the DC plug is loose in the jack or the power pack is the wrong rating. Use the VeriFone 12V pack.

• Contactless or video features are missing: the pad is under-powered. Confirm the power pack is connected rather than relying on the host.

▶ Why Use the OEM Cable

The 28-pin connector and the power-through-DB9 design are VeriFone's own. A copy that gets a pin or the power routing wrong can leave the pad rebooting mid-sale or never enumerating on the COM port at all. This is the part VeriFone tested with these pads. It is the cheapest piece of the lane and the one that fails most often, which is why it pays to fit the right one.
