▶ Do I Need the Drum or the Toner?

The toner cartridge holds the powder and runs out every 2,600 to 5,200 pages. The drum unit transfers the image and lasts about 12,000 pages. Order the drum if the printer says Replace Drum or Drum End Soon, or if pages show repeating spots, dots or lines running down the sheet. If pages are printing faint or the printer says Replace Toner, you need the Brother TN-660 / TN-630 toner cartridge instead. Many offices order one drum with every fourth toner so both arrive together.

▶ How to Install

Open the front cover and lift out the toner and drum assembly. Press the green lock lever and slide the toner cartridge out of the old drum. Unbox the new drum, remove its protective cover, and slide the toner cartridge into it until it locks. Put the assembly back in the printer and close the cover. Keep the new drum out of direct light while you work; the drum surface is light sensitive.

▶ Printer Still Says Replace Drum After Installing?

Brother printers count drum life electronically and do not reset on their own when a new drum goes in. Every model in this series has a short reset sequence, usually done with the front cover open through the printer's menu or OK button, and once it runs the message clears. Email us your printer model and the exact message on the screen; we confirm the steps with the drum manufacturer's technical team and send them to you.
