Description

Epson TM-U220 Paper Size: 3 in (76mm) x 165 ft Bond Rolls

Bond paper for the Epson TM-U220 is 3 in (76mm) wide, and these single-ply rolls carry 165 ft each on a 1/2 in core. The same roll fits the TM-U220A, TM-U220B and TM-U220D, the newer TM-U220II and the TM-U220-i, so one case covers every TM-U220 on the line.

In a lot of restaurants the TM-U220 is the kitchen printer, and when it runs dry mid-rush the tickets stop while plates wait at the pass. Each roll measures 2.95 in (74.9mm) across, inside Epson's 83mm limit, and a case holds 50, so the next roll is never far away.

Key Features

  • ✅ 3 in (76mm) wide, the one paper width every TM-U220 type takes, the Type A included
  • ✅ 2.95 in (74.9mm) across, under Epson's 83mm (3.27 in) roll limit, so the cover shuts on a full roll
  • ✅ 165 ft on every roll, so the line stops less often for a paper change
  • ✅ A red warning appears near the end of the roll, giving the crew time to load a fresh one between tickets
  • ✅ 1-ply bond made for impact printing through an Epson ERC-38 ribbon (ribbon sold separately)
  • ✅ Made in the USA: every case holds the same roll, made to a single specification

▶ Which Epson Printers Take This Roll

Epson lists 76mm (3 in) paper on a roll no larger than 83mm (3.27 in) across for each of these printers:

• TM-U220A, TM-U220B and TM-U220D, which Epson's guide names models M188A, M188B and M188D

• TM-U220PD, the parallel-interface version of the TM-U220D

• TM-U220II in Types A, B and D, the model Epson names as the TM-U220's replacement

• TM-U220-i, the OmniLink model

The letter is the type: A has an autocutter plus a take-up spool for a journal copy, B has an autocutter, and D tears off against a manual cutter. All three take this roll.

▶ How to Load a New Roll

  1. Cut the leading edge of the new roll straight with scissors.
  2. Open the roll paper cover. On a Type A, also open the unit with the unit open lever.
  3. Take the empty core out of the bay.
  4. Set the new roll in, with the paper coming off the roll the way Epson's guide shows.
  5. Draw a short length of paper out, shut the cover, then cut or tear off the extra.

Epson warns against opening the cover while the printer is printing or feeding paper. Paper moving but nothing printing? Check the ribbon cassette first (troubleshooting below).

▶ Will This Roll Fit?

✅ 3 in (76mm) x 165 ft 1-ply bond: the width every TM-U220 type takes, 2.95 in across against Epson's 83mm limit

❌ 3 1/8 in (80mm) thermal rolls: wider than the 76mm paper the TM-U220 is built for, and made for heat printing, not a ribbon

❌ 3 1/4 in (82.5mm) rolls: too wide for the TM-U220's paper path

❌ Anything bigger than 3.27 in (83mm) across: too large for the paper bay

❌ 3-ply carbonless: Epson lists an original plus one copy as the most the TM-U220 prints

Need a second copy for the expo station? The TM-U220 takes 2-ply carbonless for an original and one copy: see Epson TM-U220 Paper Rolls (2-Ply).

▶ The Ribbon Behind Every Ticket

The TM-U220 is an impact printer: the print head strikes an ink ribbon against the paper, and that ink is what forms each line. Epson specifies the ERC-38 ribbon cassette for the TM-U220, the TM-U220II and the TM-U220-i:

• ERC-38 (B), black, which Epson rates at 3,000,000 characters

• ERC-38 (P), purple, rated at 4,000,000 characters

Ribbons are sold separately. For a replacement, see our Epson TM-U220 Compatible Ribbon.

▶ Fixing Faint, Blank or Jammed Tickets

• Faint or fading print: the ribbon is wearing out. Put in a fresh ERC-38 cassette and turn its knob two or three times in the direction of the arrow, as Epson's guide shows.

• Paper feeds but nothing prints: check that the ribbon cassette is clicked in and runs between the print head and the platen without wrinkles.

• Paper jam: let the print head cool first, because it gets very hot while printing. On a Type A, lift out the take-up spool and open the unit with the unit open lever, clear the paper, then put the roll back in and close the cover.

• ERROR light on or flashing after a roll change: check that the roll paper cover is fully closed.

▶ How Far a Case Goes

A case holds 50 rolls of 165 ft, 8,250 ft of paper in all. If a kitchen ticket uses 4 in of paper, one roll prints about 495 tickets and a case about 24,750. Longer tickets mean fewer per roll, shorter ones more.

▶ Made in the USA, Case After Case

Each roll is made in the USA to a single specification. The case you open next month holds the same 3 in x 165 ft roll as the one you open today, so a printer that took the first roll takes every roll after it.
