Description

Star SP700 Bond Paper Rolls: American-Made 3" x 165' Kitchen Printer Receipt Paper

American-made bond paper rolls for the Star Micronics SP700 series kitchen printers. These 3" x 165' single-ply bond rolls are built for restaurant kitchen environments where heat, steam, and grease would ruin thermal paper. The SP700 is an impact printer that uses an ink ribbon to print on bond paper. These rolls deliver clean, lint-free feeding with consistent paper weight throughout. Available in cases of 50 rolls.

▶ About the Star SP700

The Star Micronics SP700 is a dot matrix impact printer designed specifically for kitchen environments. Unlike thermal printers that use heat-sensitive paper, the SP700 strikes an ink ribbon against bond paper to create the print. This is the reason kitchens use impact printers instead of thermal printers. Thermal paper turns black when exposed to heat, steam, or grease. A kitchen ticket printed on thermal paper next to a grill or under a heat lamp would become unreadable within minutes.

The SP700 series includes the SP742 (auto-cutter models) and SP712 (tear-bar models), available in Ethernet (ME), serial, and parallel connections. You will find these printers in restaurant kitchens, bar stations, and anywhere food orders need to be printed near heat sources. The printer is compatible with most POS platforms including Square, Clover, Toast, Lightspeed, and many others.

▶ Bond Paper vs Thermal Paper

The Star SP700 requires bond paper. It cannot use thermal paper. These are two completely different types of paper for two different types of printers.

FeatureBond Paper (SP700)Thermal Paper
Print methodImpact ribbon strikes paperHeat applied to coated surface
Ink requiredYes (ink ribbon)No
Heat resistantYes. Will not darken near heatNo. Turns black near heat sources
Kitchen safeYesNo
Print longevityPermanent (ink-based)Fades over time

If you put thermal paper in an SP700, the printer will still strike the ribbon, but the heat and friction may cause the thermal paper to darken in unpredictable ways. Always use bond paper in impact printers.

▶ Why American-Made Paper Matters

Imported bond paper is cheaper for a reason. Common problems with imported rolls include:

  • Inconsistent roll lengths. A roll advertised as 165 feet may measure 130 to 150 feet. You run through cases faster and spend more per ticket printed
  • Higher lint content. Low-grade bond paper sheds fibers during printing. This lint accumulates on the printhead and ink ribbon, causing faded prints, streaking, and premature ribbon wear
  • Inconsistent paper weight. Thin or uneven paper causes jams, misfeeds, and tears. The SP700 feeds paper through a friction mechanism that depends on consistent paper thickness
  • Rough paper edges. Poorly cut rolls have rough or uneven edges that catch on the feed mechanism, causing jams during busy service
  • Supply chain risk. Imported paper is subject to shipping delays, port congestion, and tariff changes. US-manufactured paper ships domestically with predictable lead times

TerminalDepot paper is manufactured in the United States. Every roll meets consistent length, weight, and quality standards. American made. Not imported.

▶ How to Load Paper in the Star SP700

  1. Pull the paper cover release lever to open the top cover of the printer
  2. Remove the empty core from the paper bay
  3. Place the new roll into the bay. The paper should feed from the bottom of the roll, coming up and over toward the front of the printer
  4. Pull a short length of paper through the feed path past the tear bar or auto-cutter
  5. Close the top cover firmly until it latches
  6. Press the feed button to advance paper and confirm it is feeding correctly

If the print is faint or missing, check that the ink ribbon cartridge is properly seated and not worn out. Bond paper requires a functioning ribbon to print.

▶ Signs You're Using Low-Quality Paper

  • Paper dust on the printhead and ribbon. If you see white fibers accumulating on the printhead or inside the printer, the paper is shedding lint. This causes faded prints and shortens ribbon life
  • Frequent paper jams during busy service. Inconsistent paper thickness or rough edges cause the paper to catch in the feed mechanism. This is the worst time for a jam since it happens under continuous printing load
  • Rolls that run out faster than expected. If you are replacing rolls more often, the rolls may be shorter than advertised. Measure a roll to verify
  • Faded or uneven printing. While faded print can indicate a worn ribbon, it can also be caused by paper lint coating the printhead. If the print is faded even with a new ribbon, the paper is likely the problem
  • Paper tears during printing. Thin or brittle bond paper tears under the impact of the printhead pins. Quality bond paper has consistent weight throughout the roll

▶ Ribbon Reminder

The Star SP700 requires an ink ribbon to print. The paper alone will not produce any visible text. If your prints are faded, light, or completely blank, the ribbon may be worn out and needs replacement.

Compatible ribbons:

  • Star RC-700B (black ink ribbon, single color)
  • Star RC-700BR (black/red ink ribbon, two-color for highlighted items)

A typical ribbon lasts approximately 3 to 5 million characters depending on print volume. For a busy restaurant kitchen printing tickets continuously during service, plan on replacing the ribbon every 1 to 3 months. We sell Star SP700 ribbons separately.

▶ Troubleshooting Common Star SP700 Paper Issues

  • Printing is blank or very faint? The ink ribbon is worn out or not installed. Bond paper requires a ribbon to print. Replace the ribbon cartridge (Star RC-700B or RC-700BR)
  • Paper jams during service? Check that the roll is seated properly and the paper path is clear. Remove any torn paper fragments. If jams persist, the paper may have inconsistent thickness or rough edges. Switch to quality American-made bond paper
  • Print has streaks or missing dots? The printhead pins may be obstructed by paper lint. Clean the printhead with a soft brush. If specific dots are consistently missing, the printhead may need replacement
  • Paper feeds but nothing prints? Confirm the ribbon cartridge is installed and properly seated. The ribbon must be between the printhead and the paper. Also check that the POS system is sending print jobs to the correct printer
  • Tickets printing on wrong printer? This is a POS configuration issue, not a paper issue. Check your kitchen routing settings in your POS system (Square, Clover, Toast, etc.)
  • Red printing not working (two-color ribbon)? Confirm you have a two-color ribbon (RC-700BR) installed, not a black-only ribbon (RC-700B). The printer must also be configured in the POS system to send red-highlight commands

We use this paper for our SP700 kitchen printers, I was a little hesitant at first buying paper from these guys, since it was my first time. In the end I was surprised about the quality, and the fast shipping. Definitely get this paper, you will not regret it.
