How 2-Ply Carbonless Paper Works

Unlike thermal paper (which uses heat) or regular bond paper (which prints one copy), 2-ply carbonless paper creates automatic duplicates through a chemical coating process:

1. The SP742ME's impact print head strikes the ink ribbon against the paper
2. The force of impact transfers the ink to the white top sheet (original)
3. The same impact activates the carbonless chemical coating between the two plies
4. The chemical reaction creates an identical copy on the canary yellow bottom sheet (duplicate)
5. Both copies come out of the printer together, attached
6. Tear them apart, white stays in kitchen, yellow goes to expo/server

Note: "Carbonless" means no messy carbon paper is needed between the sheets. The duplication is built into the paper's chemical coating.

Which Paper Type Do You Need?

⚠️ Important: This Printer Uses Impact Paper, NOT Thermal

The Square Kitchen Printer (Star Micronics SP742ME) is an impact/dot matrix printer. It requires:

• Bond or carbonless paper: NOT thermal paper
• An ink ribbon: (Star RC-700B), the ribbon creates the printed image
• Thermal paper: (shiny/slippery) will NOT work, it will feed through completely blank

How to Load 2-Ply Paper in Your Square Kitchen Printer

1. Open the paper cover on the SP742ME by pulling the release lever
2. Remove any remaining paper from the old roll
3. Place the 2-ply roll in the paper bay with the white ply facing up and paper feeding from underneath the roll
4. Make sure both plies are feeding together, they should not be separated
5. Pull approximately 3-4 inches of paper past the tear bar
6. Close the paper cover firmly until it clicks
7. Send a test print to verify both plies are printing clearly

Tip: If only the white copy shows text and the yellow copy is blank, the roll may be upside down. The white ply must face the print head (up) and the canary ply faces down.

Tip: If BOTH copies are blank, check your ink ribbon. The SP742ME requires a Star RC-700B ribbon to print.
