▶ About the Square Kitchen Printer

The Square kitchen printer is a dot matrix impact printer designed for restaurant kitchens running Square POS. It connects to the Square Kitchen Display System (KDS) and automatically prints order tickets as they come in from the front of house, online orders, or third-party delivery apps.

The Square kitchen printer uses a Star Micronics SP742ME print engine. It takes 3" bond paper rolls and a Star RC-700B ink ribbon. Both are standard consumables available from TerminalDepot.

Impact printers are the standard in commercial kitchens because they use ink ribbons and bond paper instead of thermal paper. This matters in a kitchen environment where heat from grills, steam from dishwashers, and grease from fryers will darken or blacken thermal prints within minutes. Bond paper tickets stay readable no matter how hot and humid the kitchen gets.

▶ Bond vs Thermal: Why Kitchens Use Bond Paper

Kitchen printers use bond paper with an ink ribbon instead of thermal paper. This is not optional. Here is why:

If you put thermal paper in a kitchen printer, it will feed through blank because the printer has no thermal print head. Even if you could print on it, the heat from a kitchen line would turn the entire ticket black within minutes. Bond paper with an ink ribbon is the only correct choice for kitchen environments.

▶ How to Load Paper in the Square Kitchen Printer

1. Open the paper cover by pulling the release lever on the right side of the printer.
2. Remove the old roll core (or any remaining paper).
3. Drop the new roll into the paper bay with the paper feeding from underneath the roll (toward you).
4. Pull 3-4 inches of paper past the auto-cutter.
5. Close the cover firmly until it clicks. Send a test print from your Square Kitchen Display to verify the paper advances smoothly.

If prints come out blank after loading, check that the ink ribbon is installed and seated properly. Blank prints on an impact printer always mean a ribbon issue, not a paper issue.

▶ Signs You're Using Low-Quality Paper or the Wrong Paper

• Paper dust on the platen or print head. Low-quality bond paper sheds lint and fibers during printing. If you see white dust accumulating inside the printer, the paper is the problem. This buildup causes faded prints and eventually damages the print head.
• Frequent paper jams. Thin, lightweight paper does not feed consistently through the printer mechanism. If you are clearing jams multiple times per shift, try switching to a heavier-weight bond roll.
• Tickets tearing during printing. Cheap paper has lower tensile strength and tears at the feed point, especially during long ticket prints. American-made bond paper uses heavier stock that holds up to continuous high-speed printing.
• Blank tickets. If the printer is feeding paper but nothing prints, you may have loaded thermal paper by mistake. Impact printers require bond paper and an ink ribbon. Thermal paper will not produce any print in an impact printer.
• Entire ticket turning dark or black. This happens when thermal paper is used near heat sources. If your tickets darken near the grill or fryer, switch to bond paper immediately.

▶ Ribbon Reminder: Your Printer Needs an Ink Ribbon

Bond paper does not print by itself. The Square kitchen printer (and all Star SP700 series printers) requires an ink ribbon to produce text on bond paper. The ribbon sits between the impact head and the paper. As the print head strikes the ribbon, it transfers ink onto the paper.

The correct ribbon for this printer is the Star RC-700B (black ink). A fresh ribbon typically lasts 3-5 million characters, depending on print density. In a busy restaurant printing 200-400 tickets per day, expect to replace the ribbon every 4-8 weeks.

Signs your ribbon needs replacing:

• Prints are getting lighter or faded
• Text is uneven (darker on one side, lighter on the other)
• Parts of characters are missing

Do not confuse a worn ribbon with a paper problem. If prints are faded, replace the ribbon first. The paper does not affect print darkness on an impact printer.

▶ Troubleshooting Common Square Kitchen Printer Paper Issues

• Blank tickets printing? Check that the ink ribbon is installed. If you loaded thermal paper by mistake, replace it with bond paper. Impact printers cannot print on thermal paper.
• Faded or light prints? Replace the ink ribbon (Star RC-700B). Ribbon wear is the most common cause of faded prints. The paper does not control print darkness.
• Paper jamming frequently? Make sure the roll is seated correctly with paper feeding from underneath. Check that the roll diameter fits the paper bay. If jams persist, the paper may be too thin. Switch to American-made bond paper with consistent paper weight.
• Paper not feeding? Open the cover, reseat the roll, and make sure paper is not caught under the platen roller. Close the cover firmly and press Feed to test.
• Tickets tearing mid-print? Lightweight imported paper tears more easily under the impact head. Use heavier-weight American-made bond paper to prevent tearing during long ticket prints.
• Red stripe appearing on tickets? This is the end-of-roll warning. The roll is almost empty. Replace it with a new roll before it runs out completely.
