How to confirm compatibility: Remove your current ink roller and check its label. If it reads CP-16, IR-40, or IR-40B, this is the correct replacement.
▶ IR-40 vs IR-40T - Which Do You Need?
| Model: | IR-40 (CP-16) | IR-40T (CP-13) |
| Color: | Black only | Black and Red |
| Red Ink: | No | Yes - prints negatives in red |
| Used For: | General calculations, receipts | Accounting, bookkeeping |
| Physical Size: | Identical | Identical |
Both rollers are the same physical size and fit the same calculators. The only difference is ink color. If your calculator prints negative numbers or subtotals in red on the paper tape, you need the IR-40T (CP-13). If everything prints in black, you need this IR-40 (CP-16).
Quick check: Look at your current roller. If it has a visible red and black ink stripe, order the IR-40T instead.
▶ How to Replace the Ink Roller
- Turn off the calculator
- Open the ink roller cover - a small hinged door or sliding panel on top near the paper feed
- Grasp the old roller by its spindle (small plastic shaft) and pull straight up
- Remove any protective cap from the new roller
- Insert the new roller into the cradle, aligning the spindle with the guide slots
- Press down gently until it seats firmly
- Close the cover
- Print a test calculation to confirm clean, even output
No tools required. Takes under 30 seconds.
▶ Compatible vs OEM - What Is the Difference?
OEM rollers (sold by Casio, Canon, Sharp, etc.) and compatible rollers produce identical print output. Compatible rollers are manufactured with new components to match OEM specifications - same ink formula, same roller material, same dimensions.
The difference is price. OEM rollers typically cost 3-5x more because you pay for brand-name packaging. Compatible rollers from TerminalDepot are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, include a 1-year warranty, and are individually tested before shipping.
▶ Print Quality and Lifespan
Each roller is manufactured with fresh ink formulated to produce crisp, clear characters on standard calculator paper tape. The ink dries quickly to prevent smudging during high-speed printing.
Lifespan depends on usage volume. Daily office use: expect 3-6 months per roller. Heavy accounting volume: 1-3 months per roller. Replace when printing becomes faded, light, or uneven.
▶ Troubleshooting
- Faded or light printing? The roller is worn out and needs replacement. Ink rollers are consumable items with a finite lifespan.
- Ink smearing on paper? The roller may have excess ink from sitting unused. Print 10-20 lines to work through it. If smearing persists, the roller surface may be damaged.
- Roller does not fit? Confirm your calculator uses the IR-40/CP-16 size. Some calculators use different roller formats (IR-30, IR-50, etc.). Check the label on your old roller.
- No print output at all? Ensure the roller is fully seated with the spindle engaged in both guide slots. Remove and reinsert. Confirm any protective cap or tape was removed from the new roller.
- Uneven printing - one side light? The roller is not seated evenly. Remove, check for debris in the cradle, and reinsert straight down with even pressure.
▶ Warranty
Every ink roller includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing and material defects. If a roller arrives defective or fails prematurely under normal use, contact TerminalDepot for a Return Authorization number. Defective rollers are replaced at no charge after inspection.
