Printer paper for the Veeder Root TLS-450 and TLS-450 Plus is 3 1/4 in (83mm) wide thermal paper, and each roll in this case carries 85 ft. Veeder-Root's manuals name paper part 514100-456 for the TLS-450, the TLS-450 Plus and the TLS4, and these rolls replace it in all three.

A tank gauge printer can sit idle for hours, then a delivery, a leak test or an alarm needs a printout right away. With 50 rolls in the case, the next roll is already in the back office when the paper runs out halfway through a delivery report.

▶ How to Load Paper in a TLS-450 or TLS-450 Plus

1. Swing the paper cover on the printer door down.
2. Flip the release lever beside the small feed roller down, pull out the old paper and lift the empty core out of the tray.
3. Free the loose end of the new roll and set the roll in the tray so the paper comes off the bottom.
4. Bring the end up over the roll and push it under the small feed roller until it comes out above the roller. Pull a few inches through and line it up straight.
5. Flip the release lever back up.
6. Press the printer button (Line Feed on the TLS-450) to advance a few lines, check that the paper runs straight, then close the cover.

Paper moves but the printout is blank? The roll went in backwards. The heat-sensitive side has to face the print head, so turn the roll around and feed it again.

▶ Fixing Blank, Faint or Stuck Printouts

• Printer Error on a TLS-450 Plus or TLS4: Veeder-Root's guides trace it to an open feed roller release. Push the release lever up.

• Printer Out Of Paper: the roll is used up. Load a new one with the steps above.

• Paper feeds but nothing prints: the roll is facing the wrong way. Turn it so the paper unwinds from underneath, then feed it again.

• Faint or light gray print from a new roll: residue from earlier paper is coating the print head. Wipe the head with rubbing alcohol on a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab, let it dry, and print again.

• Characters printing on top of each other: clear any jammed paper, reload the roll and check that the release lever is all the way up.

• Cover stays open after loading: make sure the roll lies flat in the tray and the paper runs under the small feed roller. A roll too large for the tray will also hold the cover open.

▶ How Far a Case of 50 Goes

Each roll holds 85 ft of paper, so a case of 50 holds 4,250 ft. If your reports average 1 ft of paper, one roll prints about 85 of them and a case about 4,250. Longer reports mean fewer per roll, shorter ones more.

▶ Why BPA-Free Matters

A thermal printer forms each character by heating a coating on the paper. Some coatings rely on BPA to develop that image; the coating on these rolls is BPA-free. That counts on reports people sign, pass across the counter and keep in a binder.

Every case is made in the United States to the same specification, so width, coating and winding match from the first case you buy to the tenth. If you supply several sites, each console gets the same roll.

▶ Storing Spare Rolls

Store the case closed and upright in a dry room that stays cool. Heat and direct sun can darken thermal paper before it ever reaches the printer, so keep spares out of hot trucks and away from equipment that runs warm. Solvents and cleaners can do the same, so give them a different shelf. Open one roll at a time.
